Art Picnic: Creating Community Through Art, Ecology, and Storytelling

The Deanery Project, Ship Harbour, NS
July 17th & 18th, 2021

Art Picnic was a 2-day interdisciplinary workshop series organized by Sadie Bills. It was motivated by desires to create meaningful experiences of togetherness for participants and facilitators, and to challenge conventional outcomes of art education workshops. The activities invited participants to reflect, connect, and learn through art, storytelling, and ecology.

On Saturday, artist Jennifer MacLatchy led an ocean debris weaving workshop and Andrew Jackson Obol shared stories from Uganda on the theme of land stewardship. On Sunday, Reclaiming Our Roots (Chenise Hache and James Doucette) led a forest walk and discussion about Mi’kmaw values and artist Lux Habrich facilitated an exploration of raw clay. We shared lunch with ingredients harvested from the garden and drank delicious water from a spring on site.
